As I was walking into town to the post office the other day, I fell into my habit of counting
cadence to my steps. Too many years in
the army I guess, but as Kathy will tell you, when we go for a walk I using end
up counting cadence, singing out Jodie calls.
You know, left, left, left right, left.
Or maybe 1…2…3…4…1.2.3.4, get in step.
There are so my Army calls that I have stuck in my head.
At any rate, as I was walking today, a cadence came into my
head that has been a source of thrill and excitement to me ever since I was a
kid. I have always told anyone who would
listen that there are three things in life that I find very exciting. You know, the things that make your hair
stand up. The first is attending an auto
race. When a race car flies by, the noise
and the roar will vibrate your body down to the core of your stomach. The next is a prize fight. I don’t know why, but watching a boxing match
and hearing the roar of the crowd when someone lands a good punch is, for good
or for bad, very exciting. The third is
horse racing. Nothing can make your hair
stand on edge than to be on the rail when a pack of horses come flying down the
back stretch. Dirt or mud flying through
the air. The sound of the horses, the
breathing and the clopping of their hooves.
It is thrilling, at least it is to me.
So, back to the point of all of this. I think there is a fourth. As I was walking today, I fell into my
cadence routine and I began singing in my head a cadence I have heard many,
many times. That old exciting thrill
came back as fresh as ever. It is
something that has always been thrilling to me.
So I came home and searched on ytube. It is the Texas A & M band playing the Aggie War Hymn, Seeing
those hardheads, standing in the end zone, awaiting their time to march out on
the field. I can say that there is not
much else that is so thrilling as to watch the Texas Aggie Band as it begins
the Aggie Fight Song. What do you think?
